The Parsons' Project

The Parsons Project aims to celebrate the choral works of Robert Parsons, an English composer from the 16th century. Robert Parsons (c. 1535 - 1572) was a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal and was certainly an influence, if not a teacher, of William Byrd. Following a suspicious death (he fell off a bridge into the river Trent) many of his works were not performed again and only a few, such as his Ave Maria, remain in general repertory. The Parsons Project is a research project undertaken by the Miller Theatre, Columbia University. In recent years scholars have been transcribing, editing, and reconstructing several of Parsons' works and Voces Cantabiles has acquired a number of these transcriptions. In February 2007 Voces Cantabiles recorded several of these works for a CD celebrating this forgotten composer. This definitive CD of previously unheard works is now available on the Naxos label.
